Freeware Mah Jong fonts and iconsMartin Persson's iconswww.martinpersson.org/2010/10/free-mahjong-icons Martin Persson from Sweden has created a beautiful set of Mahjong icons in both 64px and 128px sizes. The set is not complete as he still has the flowers and seasons tiles to create. License: you are free to use and modify these icons for any purpose (personal and commercial), under the condition that you provide a link to www.martinpersson.org. Mahjong, PlainWindows
TrueType (135 KB) © Yoshiki Kita, 1998 www.asahi-net.or.jp/~mn8y-kt/font/font.html Yosh's Laboratory features a rather good TrueType font for both Windows and Macintosh. The font is the copyright of Yoshiki Kita ©1998 and free to download. The example shown below is in 45pt.
MahjongWindows TrueType (37.5 KB) © BRIDGEco, Japan http://home9.highway.ne.jp/BRIDGEco/ I discovered this font quite by accident (my Japanese is not too hot!). Being a Japanese Mah Jong font it has no seasons or jokers, however it does contain a full set of tiles rotated 90° left. (I have taken the liberty of renaming the font name in this file to 'Mahjong Bridge' to allow it to be installed at the same time as Yosh's font of the same name.) The example below is shown in 45pt.
Mangan, PlainWindows TrueType (53.8 KB) Author unknown I can't remember where I downloaded this font from; it was a Japanese website. This is a clear, crisp font. While it has no seasons or flowers it does feature dice images, counters, and wind-of-the-round indicators. The example below is shown in 40pt.
Commercial Mah Jong fontsAltemus Games TwoWindows TrueType and PostScript © Altemus These Mah Jong tiles come as part of the Altemus Games Two font, available for US$19 and immediate download. Games Two also includes chess, pool, ten-pin bowling, darts and jacks images. The Mah Jong characters are accessible on the Mac by pressing Option+Shift, and under Windows by pressing Alt and number-pad codes. The example below is shown in 40pt.
CantonWindows TrueType and PostScript Type 1 Steve Smith / Alpine Electronic ©1995 This rather excellent font collection, depicting a Westernized Mah Jong set, is available from Partae in both TrueType and PostScript Type 1, for both Windows and Apple Macintosh. "The Canton font family includes 3 fonts for Mah Jong in both TrueType and PostScript formats and a nice 5 page downloadable User’s Guide. Each of the 3 Canton fonts includes the complete set of 42 Mah Jong tiles plus one blank tile. Each font has the same keymap so it is easy to switch diagram styles by just changing the font." The examples below are all shown at 45pt. Canton Canton 3D Canton 3D Shaded
Mah Jong fonts from GamesFour WindsWindows TrueType © Lagarto This TrueType font installs with the Four Winds 1.x game. It is a rather basic font, with no seasons or flowers. However, it does contain three extra Chinese characters, shown below. (While you can still download version 1 you cannot now purchase it; however, your registration code for version 2 will work with version 1.) The example below is shown in 40pt. Four Winds V2Windows TrueType © Lagarto This TrueType font installs with the Four Winds v.2.x game. This is a much improved font, in comparison with the Four Winds v.1 font (above). It contains a joker (middle row, far right) and four flowers and four seasons. The example below is shown in 40pt. Mah Jong kanji (hanzai)Displaying Mah Jong-related kanji/hanzai (Chinese characters) on your PC often requires that you install an Input Method Editor (IME) plus a handful of Unicode fonts. You can read about these on my Kanji page. If you already have the SimSun and SimHei fonts installed, and would like a more simple method for entering these characters why not use these Mah Jong Kanji fonts. These have been compiled from glyphs contained in the SimSun and SimHei TrueType fonts, and are still copyright ZhongYi Electronic Co. (with thanks to John WS Hibbs for hunting down their contact details). These are mapped to the same keys as Yoshiki Kita's Mahjong Plain font, above. Each zip file contains a TTF font file and a character map in PDF format (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or above).
Oriental-style fontsWindows TrueTypeThese are my favourite Chinese style TTF fonts, which I freely downloaded from the internet.
Postscript Type 1This Adobe Postscript font is the one I have used in the titles at the top of each Mah Jong page on this website. To use it you need to download and install Adobe Type Manager Lite (freeware), or the full Adobe Type Manager (expensive!).
